PHILOSOPHY
Within our physical education classes here at Assumption Parish Catholic School, we believe that regular physical activity, exercise and healthy nutritional choices during childhood and adolescence improve the function of body systems and mental acuity. As children develop and practice skills, they have the increasing opportunity to find enjoyment and fulfillment as active individuals. On these premises, we provide a quality health and fitness education that helps students develop the knowledge, attitudes, motor skills, self-management skills, and confidence needed to adopt, develop, and maintain physically active and healthy habits for a lifetime, all while promoting the concept that the human body is God’s creation and a temple of the Holy Spirit.
KINDERGARTEN- GRADE 3
In lower hall, our primary focus is introducing activities and games to students which include important motor skills and movement patterns that students will use throughout their lives. While engaged in these activities, students will be working vigorously to sustain a high heart rate as we get the most out of our time together. In addition, students will be receiving appropriate health and nutrition curriculum focusing on personal hygiene, identifying healthy and unhealthy snack and food options, as well as respecting others’ physical traits, abilities and space while participating in class.
GRADE 4 & 5
In middle hall, students begin participating in more team and group activities in class. While playing these activities, students have an opportunity to work with others to reach a common goal, develop leadership skills, and build integrity through sportsmanship, all of which can be used in other aspects of their lives. Students will also dive deeper into our nutrition curriculum as they begin to analyze their food choices based on the food groups and the portions of each group based on their own individual needs.
GRADE 6 - 8
In upper hall, students continue to participate in team activities to develop social skills within the affective domain of learning while beginning to engage in workouts and activities that target the 5 health and 6 skill components of fitness. The intent is to allow students to discover activities they enjoy and can pursue for the rest of their lives in order to create and maintain health enhancing behaviors after they leave Assumption.
Within the physical education department, we value our philosophy, curriculum and goals because we firmly believe that if students perform well in class, then they will perform optimally in their other classes as well. I am a firm believer that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind; through physical activity and exercise we not only make improvements socially and physically, but we improve our mind’s ability to function and perform. With this in mind, I look forward to working with your children and invite you to join us on our health and fitness journey!
